Bird feather, hackles, wing materials tend to be the protagonists of fly tying but as everybody knows, fly tying is almost impossible without tying thread. Yes. Tying thread is one of the most essential tying materials. Let's take a close look at tying thread today.

There are many kinds of products with different thickness, strength, structure, materials, etc in the market. It is nonsense to say which thread is the best thread. We should choose the best thread for each situation.

Our online fly fishing store sells many fly tying materials. We should stock all threads available but some items have about 40 colors so it is impossible for us to stock all products. We always stock 400-800 Uni Thread which is the most popular among others but don't stock less popular products. We can bring in any thread so please book yours.

  Diameter, strength

Few customers ask about materials. Well. Nylon, polyester, etc mean little to us who are not fiber/fabric specialists. However it is common that a customer asks us about thickness. Basically a thinner thread is easy to use but it doesn't come with strength so this is the eternal subject. Nylon thread has limitation in strength so it cannot be too thin.

Here take a look at one of the most popular threads, Uni Thread by Canadian company Uni Products. Uni Thread has 3 types such as 3/0, 6/0, 8/0. The 3/0 is the thickest and strongest. Thickness of Danville Flymaster 6/0 and Uni Thread 6/0 are different. Each company use the Uni so it is impossible for us to compare the thickness by "x/0" expression. Actually 16/0 by Veevus and 17/0 by Uni Products are totally different.

Some brands use "denier" to explain thickness and weight. Here are some samples of popular products.

Uni Thread 8/0 - 72D, Uni Thread 6/0 -135D, Uni Thread 3/0 -220D, Danville Flymaster 6/0 Nylon Thread - 70D, Wapsi Ultra Thread - 70D, 140D

If a fiber of 9000m weighs 1 gram, it is called 1 denier. This doesn't mean strength so if a thread is made of metal, the denier should be really big. In fact a new product called Tungsten Thread just came to our stock in 2014

"What thread is the best for #14 flies?" is a common question by customers. But this is a difficult question. Different thread should be used on each fly, even if the hook size is the same. For instance if you tie a heavy chain eye with a nylon 6/0 thread, the chances are that eye will come off the fly after some minute casting. Under such situation strong threads like Kevlar, GSP Thread are often used. For regular sized Woolly Buggers, Bucktail Streamers, Uni Thread 6/0, Wapsi Ultra Thread 140D will do a good job.

For classic salmon flies Uni Thread 8/0 is one of the best products as it doesn't build up much on head. Also Uni Thread 8/0 is good for small sized streamers.

If you are a beginner and want to tie trout stream flies, you won't make a mistake with Uni Thread 8/0. Good quality and reasonable if you shop with us. Can be pricey in Japan but our price is the best across the nation. We see some tiers using Uni Thread 6/0 for #14 dry flies or so. Is it too thick? We recommend 8/0 for stream flies.

When size comes down to #20 or so, you start to feel Uni Thread 8/0 is a bit too thick. Our recommendation is Uni Trico Thread then. This 40 denier sensitive flat thread is good to make a flat and smooth body on a tiny hook. Yes. It is not very strong so you need to take the best caution .

Uni Thread 8/0 -

  Microscope observation

We used our microscope to take many pictures of tying threads available in the market. The final image is just a 1 jpeg but it took us more than 3 hours. There should be few microscopic images of those products so we hope you enjoy it.

This shows not only thickness but also texture of each product. Monofilament threads look obviously different from other nylon threads. The middle parts are either reflected or translucent and look light in color shade. The surface is very smooth.

Kevlar and GSP Thread are not twisted so each filament spreads and the bunch looks thicker than other nylon threads. Uni Thread has 3 types in size. 6/0 and 8/0 are twisted but 3/0 is flat so you can see fibers spread more than the other 2.

Often customers ask about difference between Danville Flymaster 6/0 and Uni Thread 6/0, 8/0. As you see the image, Danville 6/0 is close to Uni Thread 8/0. If you use Danville 6/0 by the same strength for Uni Thread 6/0, you will break the thread easily. Like stated above, it is nonsense to identify 2 threads just because both are 6/0. Danville 6/0 is much thinner so naturally weaker than Uni Thread 6/0.

  Structure

Structure is also an important factor. Flat threads such as Wapsi Ultra Thread and Danville Flymaster don't build up on the hook so you can make less bumpy but a smooth body. Its tendency is more obvious for flat tinsel body. It is difficult to make a super flat foundation with Uni Thread 8/0 or 6/0. Its bump doesn't stand out if the fly is big but for tiny flies, it can be ugly. In that case flat thread might be chosen by many people. We are talking about neatness so it doesn't matter to catch fish.

Monofilament threads have a round segment and stiffer than other threads so they tend to make bumpy bodies. Also knot tends to come off so after a half hitch, gluing is mandatory.

  Color

Color is no doubt significant. Most threads come in many color variations so it is hard for most hobbyist to buy all colors. Few trout stream fishermen need purple or blue. Let's start with these following colors. If you use a thread in a totally different color from the body, the outcome goes ugly.

Trout stream fly
Minimum
+ Black, Camel, Light cahill, Olive, Tan, Gray

Preferable
Dark brown, Rusty brown, Rusty dun, Iron gray

Then you can add White, Olive dun, Light olive, Orange, Chartreuse, etc, depending on your budge.

Saltwater fly
Minimum
Clear, White, Red, Tan, Blue

Preferable
+ Black, Pink, Orange, Olive, Camel

  Super strong thread

When it comes to strength, GSP Thread and Kevlar Thread should be chosen. Super strong for the diameter but can damage your tying tools so you need to be careful. If you use a pair of regular scissors, you cannot cut it right off by 1 stroke. Some fibers stay uncut like when you chew tough beef. They damage bobbin holders so please use tough products such as ceramic tube models.

It seems that Kevlar thread is used for magic extensively due to its strength. The commercial magic goods are expensive so we wonder if they can split the strand and use our Kevlar thread.

  Wax

Tying wax is often used. Good to prepare 1 or 2 on your tying desk. Any type should be ok but we stock 3 kinds all the time. The block wax is reasonable and good in quality but can get your fingers and desk messy. The lipstick type doesn't make a mess but a bit higher in price.

Some thread are pre-waxed, while others are non-waxed. Waxed thread can get the tube of the bobbin holder stuck. It should be cleaned from time to time.

   Tip

For comfy tying, smooth finger skin is essential. Especially if you work on midge flies, rough skin can cause problems. Twisted threads are usually ok but filaments of flat threads tend to be damaged by rough skin. In winter make sure to use skin cream to keep your fingers nice and smooth. Cold months need midge flies so this is important.

Flat threads such as UTC Ultra Thread tends to be frail when your fingers are rough, while wound threads such as Uni Thread can be strong against abrasion.

  Recommendation

Well, here is a table so that you can choose your thread depending on your purpose. We are not sure if our recommendations suit you but just give these a try and see how they are for you. Eventually you should be able to meet the best thread for you.

There is no thread which can do all jobs. You need some products and also some colors, too. If you tie flies seriously for 1 or 2 years, you will end up with 20-30 threads on your tying desk, which is also a fun of fly tying.
