I talk about line control. It is not about mending but more about the line
management. You don't know what I am talking about but you will see.
Fly lines are thick. Unusually thicker than lines used for other fishing
methods. Therefore fly lines don't get tangle so badly like a fishing line
for lure fishing or something. Relatively easy to untangle it. If you pull
20m of monofilament line off a spinning reel, the line will tangle like
a hell and you will end up with a need of scissors. But a 20m of floating
line taken out of the fly reel should be ok, unless it is windy or wavy
in the water.
Fly lines is not bad at tangling but this is a mistake. Many people think
fly lines don't make a mess and they want to cast as far as possible. So
they don't give a shit and leave as long long as they want. If you are
after 20cm yamame, you won't get in trouble. You don't really have to worry much, if your
target fish don't dash like large mouth bass. Yamame fishing is so exciting
and puzzling regardless of the fish size but anglers want big fish. If
you step into "big fish hunting", you have to think about line
management all the time.
People told me to use gravel guards. To keep sands off. But I came to a
conclusion that I have to use gravel guards for another reason, after some
bitter experiences.
In my middle 20's I lived in Canada to learn salmon and steelhead fishing.
With poor experiences, I was lazy enough to leave gravel guards in my truck.
Steelhead is one of the ultimate targets for many people but they an be
destructive sometimes. We like rocky river sight steelheading. Big fish
are visible only 10ft ahead. We send flies into their holding water. As
soon as they grab a fly, they dash and jump like a pin ball.

ライン・コントロールの話をします。といってもメンディングなどの操作ではなく、処理のほうです。ライン管理と言っても良いかもしれません。
フライラインは太いです。他の釣りから比べると異常に太いです。ですから、ルアーのラインのように絡みついたら解けないというほどのことは起きません。スピニング・リールに巻いたラインを２０ｍ引き出して足元に置いたら、きっと絡まって、ハサミを入れなくてはいけないという結末を見るでしょう。フローティング・ラインを２０ｍ
足元に置いていても、歩いたり、風や波に動かされない限り、それほど絡むことはないはずです。
これが油断の元です。ラインは絡まない、遠投したいという気持ちから、好きなだけ足元に放っておきたくなります。20ｃｍのヤマメ専門に狙っているなら、きっと問題ないでしょう。ブラックバスを狙っている場合もあまり問題ないでしょう。走らない魚ならそれほど気にする必要はありません。小さなヤマメ釣りももちろん難解なゲームで大好きですが、釣り人は大物を求めます。大物釣りに足を踏み入れたなら、ラインの管理を頭に入れておくと、いつか救われます。
グラベル・ガードはサボらずにしっかり巻きなさいと言われました。砂利が入るから。しかし私は何度か痛い目に遭って、違う意味でグラベル・ガードはした方が良いと思っています。経験の浅いころ、適当な格好でスティールヘッドを釣っていました。グラベル・ガードもせず、ウェーディング・ブーツを履いて、一日釣りまくりました。７０ｃｍを超えるぐらいから、驚異的なスピードで釣り人を魅了する訳ですが、時として破壊的な動きを見せます。上流域の渓流でのスティールヘッディングを好む我々は、サイト・フィッシングで狙っていきます。目の真３ｍに何匹もの大型魚が泳いでいて、そこにフライを流し込んでいきます。フッキングと同時に大ジャンプを見せ、下流に一気に走ります。

If your line is taken instantly, the line jumps up and dances like a creature. I guess monster fish like tarpon do more aggressive actions. Your line gets tangled easily on a craggy surface. |

Line coating can be peeled. I learned from the mistakes so started to stand
in the water so that the line doesn't snag the rocks. But still I lost
some fish. One of the bad lucks was hardware on my wading boots and shoe
lace. My line got stuck there and the line got damaged, which made me think
seriously about line management.
The basic way is to store all extra line in your reel. Easy to say but
we tend to be lazy. This can apply lake fishing. I had a bad experience
in Lake Chuzenji.
Make sure to minimize the length of your line out of the reel. If you switch
to closer spot, reel in extra line constantly. Use your gravel guards.

一気にラインが持っていかれると、ラインが生き物のように空中に浮かびあがります。飛び上がると言った方が良いかもしれません。岩場だとこれが当然絡みます。ラインのコーティングがすぐに剥ぎ取られました。あまりのショックになるべく岩場に立たないで、水にラインを落とすようになりましたが、これでも何度もラインが絡んで魚を失うことになりました。多かったのが、ブーツの金具と靴ひもです。ここにラインが引っかかって、コーティングがまた剥け、0ｘのティペットが切られ、という情けない連続で、急速にライン管理を考えるようになりました。
無駄なラインはリールに収納するというのが基本で、言うは簡単なのですが、初めての人を見ていると、やっぱり遠投したいからなのか、無駄に出してしまうのです。これは湖の釣りでもそうで、中禅寺湖でも昔無駄にラインをだして、痛い目に遭ったことがあります。

ラインはしまいましょう。遠距離から、近距離を狙うようになって、しばらく遠く投げないなら、リールに巻き取りましょう。グラベルガードも使いましょう。
そして無駄な遠投はしないようになりました。スペイでもシューティング・ヘッドでもフルラインでもいいですが、釣り人はやっぱり遠くに投げたがります。特にダウン・クロスの釣りをすると意味もなく30-40ｍも投げたがります。投げて、ラインを張った状態でファイトが始まったのなら問題ないですが、リトリーブを３０ｍもして、足元に３０ｍのラインを落とした状態で、スティールヘッドなどが掛かった時は悲惨です。釣り人の都合など関係ありませんので走りまくります。足元に流していた絡まったラインがストリッピングガイドに衝突すれば、ラインのコーティングが剥けるどころか、ロッドも壊れてしまいます。折角の遠征で道具が壊れるのは忍びないです。ラインのコーティングは思ったよりも容易に剥けます。北海道でもリールに引っかかってしまったラインが剥けたことがあります。
ラインは必要以上出さない、必要以上投げないという意識が、ビッグ・ゲームの場面でお役に立てると嬉しく思います。私は散々魚をばらしましたし、道具も損傷しました。大きく意識が変わりましたが、他の誰かから言われたことも、本で読んだこともありませんでした。自身の経験がすべてです。 |

I stopped casting long more than necessary. Fly casters want to cast
as far as possible, no matter what kind of system they use. Especially
if you are casting downstream, you tend to cast 30-40m, once you get a
Spey rod or so.
If you cast a 30m line out , then bring 20m in and a big fish take your
fly, you are hopeless. Fish is desperate to run away, which pulls your
tangled line to the stripping guide. Not only this can peel the coating
of your line, but also can break your rod.
Unnecessary long cast is useless. I lost many fish with my poor experiences and damaged my gear. My thought changed a lot but I had never heard from somebody else or any books. Based on my own experiences. It is a common sense for experienced big game fishers but for most Japanese anglers, It is not known much. |
