Bow River Bugger

Bow River is a famous river running mainly thru Alberta, Canada. She runs
right thru a famous tourism place Banff, which many non-fishermen know
of. The section which is important and popular is way down below Banff
and near Calgary. The specialty is plenty aquatic insects, many big fish
and additional terrestrial insects. I have a good friend in Calgary. According
to to his story, it is possible to catch more than 100 fish on nymph but
they prefer dry flies for more dynamic actions like hopper fishing.
In 2013 a historic catastrophic flood attacked the Calgary area and fishery
was damaged big time but the recovery is coming. I am invited by a friend
to the camping drift trip so I should make it happen someday.
Well, this fly was named after this famous river. When a Canadian friend
of mine showed this fly for the first time, I thought of it as corny, as
it was obvious that this is between Woolly Bugger and Muddler Minnow. Honestly
I didn't really like it first but after seeing my friend catching fish
after fish in a river, my outlook changed completely. In lakes, this fly
kept catching fish, which got me to like this fly so much.
We don't use this much around Kanto region but In Hokkaido there are many places where this works. The first brown trout came to this fly in Chitose River. I visited an area which a customer showed. He said it was difficult to catch sizeable brown trout there but it took only 20 mins to get the first bite. This fly works magically on brown trout and iwana(char).

ボウ・リバーと言うのはカナダ、アルバータ州をメインに流れる有名河川です。観光地として有名なバンフ周辺を通ることから、釣りをしない人々の間でも世界的に有名で場所です。フライフィッシングで重要なのは、国立公園のバンフよりも下流のカルガリー周辺です。この川のすごさは、水生昆虫の多さ、魚の濃さと更にテレストリアルが混じることです。ロッキー山脈、氷河からの雪解けがシーズン初期には激しいため、初夏以降の釣りになります。
私は上流域しか釣りをしたことがないのですが、カルガリー在住の友人の話では、下流域の釣りは凄まじいそうです。ドリフトしてニンフを流せば100匹釣れることもありますが、ダイナミックな釣りをするためにはホッパーなどを多用するようです。2013年には歴史的な大洪水が起こり、壊滅的なダメージが起きたカルガリー・エリアですが、今後回復が期待されています。毎年、友人に河原のキャンプでののドリフト・トリップを招待されますので、いつか行きたいと思っています。
さて、そんな世界レベルの川の有名フライです。最初カナダの友人に見せられた時、なんて安直なフライかと思いました。ウーリーババーとマドラーの合いの子は明白で、釣れるのでしょうが、使いたいとは思いませんでした。ところがこれをとある川で、シンキング・ラインに結んで使う友人が連発するのです。その後、湖においてもこのフライの威力には驚きました。それ以降、このフライへの評価が180度変わり、広く使うようになりました。関東近郊ではあまり使うことはありませんが、北海道などでは良い釣りができます。最初の思い出は千歳川のブラウンで、難しいと言われた区間でも、バイトが次々とやってきました。
レインボーやヤマメ、サクラマスにも良いですが、ブラウン、岩魚に特に効果が高いような気がしています。
