Cowichan River Caddis

I lived in Canada to learn fly fishing in my 20's. I ended up with a beautiful
town called Lake Cowichan. A very nice family offered me a room right beside
the legendary river and I fished there 3 times a day.
Cowichan River has steelhead, brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat and
some pacific salmon.
I fished a very famous spot every single evening from March to July to
learn the transition of the hatches. There is small light olive caddis
in size about 14-16. Fish start to rise for these small bugs at dusk. For
earlier weeks, any caddis fly patterns work but later they start not to
work well. I picked up stuff in stomach and took it home for observation.
I made some patterns but none of them worked enough. I paid attention to
the belly shape and made the prototype of this fly. It worked dramatically.
I started to use this variation and could take most rises.
In Cowichan River there is a huge hatch of western march brown. Some articles say fish are crazy for march brown but I found that most fish focus on small caddis in springtime. I fished until 10pm harder than anybody else and seldom saw other anglers so I am proud of my knowledge.
In Japan this fly works good so I call this Cowichan River Caddis, memorable
river.

私は20代の時にカナダの有名河川カウチン・リバーのほとりに住み着いて、釣りを勉強していました。スティールヘッドとブラウン・トラウトが釣れるという非常に珍しい川で各種サーモン、レインボー、カットスロートなども釣れる銘川です。
この川では4月ごろから＃14-16のオリーブのカディスがスーパーハッチをします。森の中のトレイルを10分歩いて毎晩10時まで釣りをしていたのは私だけですので、この川のカディスは世界でも私が相当詳しい方だと思っています。毎日車を停めておいたので、住み着いているのかと聞かれるほど、釣りまくりました。早期はエルクヘア・カディスでも釣れるのですが、6月も近くなってくると、どうにも釣れなくなります。ストマック・ポンプでカディスを持ち帰って、毎日毎日眺めて、タイイングしていました。一定の結果が出るようになったのはウイングやハックルではなく、お腹の形を真剣に真似てからです。カディスの腹部はヒョウタンの下部のような感じで、この下から見た時のシルエットが合っていないとどうにもならないライズでした。目の前に同時に10か所ぐらいでバシャバシャやっていても、一匹も取れない晩もありました。結局このフライを作ってから、多くのライズを取れるようになりました。
日本語ではあまりないと思いますが、英語ではこの有名河川の記事を良く見ます。その中でウエスタン・マーチブラウンが春に猛烈なハッチをすると書かれていますが、大抵マーチブラウンよりもこの小さなライズに偏食しています。いわゆるマスキング・ハッチなんだと思いますが、これほど顕著な例は他では遭遇したことがありません。マーチブラウンのスピナーの飛翔は日本のモンカゲロウと同じく凄まじいものですが、カディスがお腹の殆どの内容物だったことが不思議でした。
日本国内でもこのフライで良く釣れますので、今でもたびたびお世話になる思い出のフライです。
